Telangana-Philippines Farm Trade Set To Expand: UttamHyderabad: Telangana is looking to deepen its agricultural trade ties with the Philippines beyond rice exports, with the Southeast Asian nation expressing interest in sourcing high-quality seeds and meat products from the state.Civil supplies minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy said the development could pave the way for a broader and long-term agricultural partnership benefiting Telangana farmers and agro-based industries.Following a meeting in New Delhi with Philippines secretary of agriculture Francisco P Tiu Laurel Junior, Uttam said the discussions had opened prospects for significantly expanding agricultural trade between the two sides.“The Philippines has shown keen interest not only in purchasing more rice from Telangana but also in sourcing high-quality seeds and meat products. This could develop into a significant and diversified agricultural trade partnership,” he said.Significantly, the Philippines has indicated its willingness to procure additional quantities of Telangana rice at a competitive price, among the best rates secured by the state in export markets.Uttam said the Philippines offered substantial potential for scaling up Telangana’s rice exports because of its continuing dependence on imported rice.Rice consumption in the Philippines is estimated at 17.6 million metric tonnes (MMT) in 2025-26. While domestic paddy production is projected at 19.52 MMT, milling losses leave a gap between local availability and demand, creating a need for imports.Highlighting the opportunity, Uttam said the Philippines imported 2.38 MMT of rice between Jan and May, a 16.5% increase over the corresponding period last year.Against this backdrop, Telangana is positioning itself as a reliable and competitive supplier to the Philippine market. Sustained exports could provide an important outlet for the state’s surplus rice while supporting farmers and the rice milling industry.The minister said the latest discussions were particularly encouraging as they had expanded from a rice-focused engagement to a broader agricultural trade dialogue.Telangana’s strong seed industry and established food and meat processing sectors could also benefit from access to the Philippine market, creating opportunities for farmers, seed companies, rice millers, meat processors and other agro-based industries.Uttam said the state govt’s objective was to secure stable international markets rather than rely on occasional export opportunities. Expanding Telangana’s agricultural footprint in countries such as the Philippines would strengthen the farm-to-export value chain, improve market access for producers and encourage greater investment in processing and value addition, he said.
