Tripura plans vehicle scanners at Churaibari border post

Agartala: Tripura govt is planning to install an advanced vehicle-scanning system at the Churaibari check post on the Assam–Tripura border to monitor the interstate movement of goods and curb the transport of illegal items.Finance and information technology minister Pranajit Singha Roy said the proposed system would automatically capture details of vehicles, their cargo and drivers, and transmit the information to the headquarters in real time. The technology is also expected to reduce checking time and ensure smoother movement of vehicles. The minister said overloaded vehicles frequently enter Tripura from Assam and Meghalaya, with some allegedly carrying illegal goods. He stressed the need for a more efficient surveillance mechanism that would strengthen enforcement without disrupting normal traffic. The scanner-based system would record details such as the vehicle number, the materials being transported, and the driver’s name and address, while avoiding unnecessary stops at the check post. The data would help create a comprehensive database of vehicles entering the state and assist authorities in tracking the movement of prohibited items.Singha Roy said the introduction of the goods and services tax had reduced the relevance of traditional check posts, making technology-driven monitoring systems necessary for regulating the movement of goods between states. He also highlighted the state govt’s efforts to expand the use of digital technology in governance, including the NextGen HRMS platform developed by the finance department. The system covers various stages of a govt employee’s service lifecycle. The minister said Tripura had made significant progress towards becoming a digitally empowered state, with e-office systems and digital proceedings being implemented from the assembly to the panchayat level. Digital delivery mechanisms, he added, had enabled beneficiaries to access govt schemes more quickly and transparently.
