— Attachment Content: 24-_basistha_ps_arrest_fake_tantrik-_tathagata.docx —Tathagata Bhattacharjee Guwahati: Police officers from the Basistha police station in the city, have arrested a man on Monday night for allegedly impersonating a tantrik and cheating citizens by promising to solve their problems through rituals. According to Basistha PS officer-in-charge (OC), the accused has been identified as Faruk Ojha. “Ojha was a self-styled tantrik, who allegedly duped a woman in Sankardev Nagar area of the city, by staging a fake puja and stealing her gold ornaments on February 11. Acting on technical inputs, he was arrested,” the OC said. The OC also said that after his arrest, a significant amount of items were recovered from his possession including a motorcycle, fake certificates, three mobile phones, and clothes which were worn during the incident. “Gold jewellery, and cash of Rs 57,420 was also recovered from his possession. However, further probe also led to the arrest of a jewellery receiver named Santosh Kumar Prasad, who hails from Kheroni area in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district,” he also said. According to the police, Ojha used to hand over gold to Prasad, who would melt it down. Among the melted gold recovered were also ornaments stolen from the complainant, confirming that the stolen jewellery had been processed in the same way to disguise its origin.“We have registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Act, and he has been forwarded to the local court as well,” he also said. Police have also advised citizens to remain cautious against such frauds, and report any suspicious activities immediately by calling 112.
