Aizawl: Poor road conditions on Aizawl-Silchar route have caused hardship for commuters, transport operators, drivers and traders, particularly in towns and villages along national highways 306 and 6 in Kolasib district in northern Mizoram, near the Assam border.A resident of Bilkhawthlir said several stretches of the highways had deteriorated badly, making travel difficult and dangerous and disrupting the movement of goods and vehicles.The two highways are key road links for Mizoram, connecting the state with Silchar and Hailakandi district in Assam. They are used regularly by commuters, traders and transport operators. Residents said the poor condition of the roads during this monsoon was similar to last year’s.State PWD minister Vanlalhlana recently told the assembly that the department was aware of poor road conditions at several places in the state. He said 19 locations had been identified for priority repair and improvement works, which would begin after the monsoon rains subside.The minister said the department had prepared plans to repair the worst-affected stretches and that road improvement works had begun from Aizawl earlier during the dry season.He said roads in Aizawl were currently in better condition than highways and rural roads, and the department would now focus on repairing roads in other districts.
