Bengaluru: For the first time this year, Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) reported a domestic departure on time performance (OTP) rate above 90%. The airport’s July OTP report reveals a 93% punctuality, a climb up from 89% in May.In terms of domestic airlines, Air India maintained the highest average departure OTP during the last three months — 86% in May, 97% in June and 96% in July. Among domestic carriers servicing Bengaluru, Spicejet recorded the least punctuality, maintaining only 41% OTP in July. The figures were even lesser at 16% and 18%, respectively, during May and June.Along with departures, arrivals saw slightly better timelines in July with figures improving to 88% from 86% in June. Air India saw OTP of 94% in July, followed by Indigo at 93%. Spicejet was the tailender in arrivals as well — it recorded 6% OTP.Airport figures point out that the least delays in July were recorded between 3am and 8.59am — a 2% overall delay. The time period between 11pm and 2.59am saw the highest delay at 14%.According to operator Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), during this time period, multiple reasons, including passenger and baggage handling, contributed to the delays. Other contributors were automated equipment failures, operational and crew reasons.Reactionary factors such as delay while awaiting connecting passengers, baggage or cargo from another incoming flight, passenger or baggage processing errors involving through-checked transits, aircraft rotation, cabin crew rotation affected the airport’s OTP.Currently, KIA is India’s second busiest airport in terms domestic flight departures, handling 43.8 million passengers in 2025. It recorded an average of 765 air traffic movements (ATMs) last year.
