Chandigarh: Haryana’s sex ratio at birth (SRB) fell to 900 girls per 1,000 boys in Jan-Jun 2026, the state’s worst figure in eight years.Haryana is the state from where PM Narendra Modi had launched the Beti Padhao, Beti Bachao campaign in Jan 2015.SRB in Haryana was 923 in 2025 and 910 in 2024, with several districts reporting sharp declines, according to data tabled in the state assembly on Monday.The figures were provided by women and child development minister Shruti Choudhry in response to a question by Congress MLA Aditya Surjewala, who sought district-wise SRB data since 2019 and details of measures to reverse the decline.Charkhi Dadri recorded the steepest fall, from 913 in 2025 to 829 in the first six months of 2026. Panipat dropped from 951 to 880, Jind from 918 to 878, Ambala from 926 to 884 and Panchkula from 971 to 903.Other districts also saw declines, including Gurgaon (901 to 871), Jhajjar (915 to 871), Hisar (926 to 895), Mahendragarh (905 to 869), Yamunanagar (943 to 895), Sirsa (937 to 904) and Kaithal (924 to 903).Some districts improved. Palwal’s SRB rose from 912 to 930, Faridabad’s from 916 to 920 and Karnal’s from 944 to 945.Haryana’s SRB stood at 923 in 2019, fell to 914 in 2021, then rose to 917 in 2022 and 916 in 2023 before dropping to 910 in 2024.Govt said it had stepped up enforcement under the PCPNDT and MTP Acts, with 1,422 FIRs registered under applicable provisions.Districts were also conducting awareness campaigns, rallies, street plays, beti janamotsavs (celebration of a girl’s birth), signature drives, health campaigns and the “Selfie with Daughter” initiative.Under Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao, women sarpanches and panches have been designated brand ambassadors to strengthen efforts to improve the SRB.Surjewala also sought details of vacancies in the Haryana State Commission for Protection of Child Rights. The govt said the chairperson’s post was filled, while all six member posts had remained vacant since Dec 15, 2025, with the file under process.
