Cops probe Rs 1.1 cr SIM fraud racket

Kolkata: The Cyber Cell of Kolkata Police has launched a probe into a widespread cyber fraud network involving the creation and distribution of unauthorised “ghost SIM cards”. The illegal operation led to residents across the city losing over Rs 1.1 crore within two months.According to cops, on and before Aug 21, several point of sale (PoS) telecom vendors, distributors, and store employees allegedly entered into a criminal conspiracy, fraudulently accessing and using confidential customer data, documents, and biometric information gathered during routine transactions. They impersonated genuine subscribers to illegally activate multiple SIM cards. These SIMs were then supplied to cybercrime racketeers, enabling them to execute fraudulent financial transactions amounting to Rs 83.1 lakh and Rs 26.3 lakh across two operational modules.
