Kolkata: The Kolkata Police has completed collection of all CCTV footage from the four entry gates of Jadavpur University. A special team has now begun to compare the footage from the entry and exit points with those collected from the traffic dept.Lalbazar has also confirmed identifying security guards who were on duty on the night of Aug 19 and again during the day on Aug 20. Sources said a few of them will be asked to record their statements and also identify the perpetrators, if required. The team also studied the location of the CCTV cameras and examined the place of occurrence.“Besides technical leads from footage collected so far, we will also speak to security guards to identify the perpetrators of violence. One area of focus will be outsiders and to ascertain if the incident was pre-planned. We can say that the identification of the accused has taken an important turn,” said a police officer, adding that no statement from anyone has been officially recorded yet. Additional footage has also been sought from the public and media, said sources.Lalbazar on Tuesday also confirmed that the requisition for a forensic visit to the clash spots has also been made on behalf of the police. However, the cops remained tight-lipped on the probable date of the visit.A team of Kolkata Police led by ACP Manoj Jha on Tuesday visited the JU campus and spoke to the JU authorities for over an hour before collecting the required footage.JU officiating registrar Selim Box Mandal said the police were probing the Aug 19 violence and the next day’s ABVP and SFI demonstration before the main gate, during which the emblem of the university was damaged.The JU officials reiterated that there are several confidential matters that the probe will include and hence cannot be disclosed publicly. “However, we have begun the process of providing everything requested by the police,” said an official. He added that the university’s vice-chancellor was unwell and hence, the registrar spoke to the police on the university’s behalf.Lalbazar sources said that the initial notices are likely to be issued also to the student netas who arranged two rallies — both by ABVP and Left — for holding illegal rallies and entering into skirmishes with cops. “Since this involved clashes outside the campus, the collection of evidence, including CCTV footage, was easier and at an advanced stage,” said an officer.
