Officials get adverse entries for laxity in enforcement against old old vehicles in NCR

Lucknow: Transport commissioner Ashutosh Niranjan has issued a “special adverse entry” to 13 officials from districts within the National Capital Region (NCR) due to their failure to take effective enforcement action against ‘end of life’ (EOL) vehicles (BS-I, BS-II, and BS-III standards) in accordance with the directives of Supreme Court.Niranjan said during the 24th meeting of the commission for air quality management held on March 13, a requirement was set for the impounding of EOL vehicles in NCR and their subsequent scrapping through authorised vehicle scrapping facility centres. The transport commissioner had issued clear directives to take effective enforcement action against diesel vehicles older than 10 years and petrol vehicles older than 15 years. The instructions also set a target of impounding approximately 500 vehicles daily in each district of the NCR region. However, a review meeting chaired by the chief secretary found that enforcement efforts had fallen short of the target. According to the review, only 666 EOL vehicles were impounded across the entire NCR region.
