6.5kg abdomino-pelvic mass removed in op at PGI
Doctors at Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) successfully removed a 6.5 kg abdomino-pelvic mass from a 48-year-old postmenopausal woman

Lucknow: A 48-year-old postmenopausal woman was relieved of an abdomino-pelvic mass weighing 6.5 kg by doctors at Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences, marking the institute’s third consecutive successful surgery for a giant abdominal mass in a month. The woman had massive abdominal swelling that made walking, sitting and breathing difficult. The mass was also pressing on her right kidney. She had undergone an attempted surgery at another centre on two years ago, but the procedure had to be abandoned after doctors opened and closed the abdomen without removing the mass.Following detailed evaluation and surgical planning, the SGPGIMS team removed the solid-cystic mass. It had extensively engulfed the uterus and both ovaries, turning their identification and preservation into a challenge.Led by Dr Anju Rani, the team performed meticulous dissection to safely remove the lesion. The patient tolerated the procedure well and her postoperative recovery was satisfactory. The institute said the successful surgery highlighted its expertise in managing complex giant abdomino-pelvic masses and reflected the importance of meticulous planning and coordinated care.
