RAJKOT: A 26-year-old resident doctor was allegedly abused, slapped and threatened by a colleague inside the emergency room of Rajkot Civil Hospital on Thursday evening following a disagreement over admitting a critical patient.The Pradyuman Nagar Police have registered an FIR against Dr Ashwin Ramani under sections 115(2), 352 and 351(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.According to the complaint filed by Dr Krisha Singala, a resident doctor in the medicine department for the past six months, the incident occurred between 7.30pm and 7.45pm on Thursday.Dr Singala stated that an elderly female patient in critical condition requiring ventilator support was brought to the hospital.When she requested the on-duty doctor, Dr Ashwin Ramani, to admit the patient to the emergency ward, he reportedly dismissed the request and insisted on transferring her to a general ward.When Dr Singala reiterated the urgency of the patient’s condition, Dr Ramani allegedly lost his temper, hurled verbal abuses and slapped her. He also allegedly issued criminal threats before other hospital staff and security personnel intervened and escorted him away.Dr Singala said the entire incident was captured by CCTV cameras installed in the emergency room.She further said she had previously submitted a written complaint against Dr Ramani on July 1, 2026, to the resident medical officer (RMO) through the hospital superintendent, but no action was taken at the time.Accompanied by her father and uncle, Dr Singala approached the Pradyuman Nagar Police Station on Thursday night to formally lodge the FIR.Resident doctors at Rajkot Civil Hospital went on strike during the night and protested against the behaviour of the senior doctor. An emergency meeting involving Dr Singala’s family members, civil hospital authorities and representatives of resident doctors was held at night.Later, speaking to the media, Dr Singala said, “I have received very good support from the hospital and administration. I have been heard by all the senior officials and they have supported me in a positive way. They promised me to take appropriate action in my favour.”Dr Ramani is a senior medical officer deputed in the emergency ward.Resident medical officer Dr Harshad Dusra said, “Dr Ramani is sent on mandatory leave and he has been informed not to report on duty till the appropriate decision is taken by the health department. We have already submitted a report to Gandhinagar and the decision is awaited.”
