Hyderabad: The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) has dramatically altered Telangana’s constituency-wise electorate profile, with six Hyderabad assembly segments slipping into the list of the state’s 10 smallest constituencies after large-scale absent, shifted, dead, and duplicate (ASDD) exclusions.Three of them, Sanathnagar, Secunderabad Cantonment and Charminar, are now among Telangana’s five smallest constituencies, a category that previously did not include a single Hyderabad seat.Before the SIR exercise, Telangana’s five smallest constituencies were Bhadrachalam with 1.5 lakh electors, Aswaraopeta with 1.6 lakh, Bellampalli with 1.8 lakh, Banswada with 1.9 lakh and Chennur with 1.97 lakh.The draft electoral roll published on Aug 17 has significantly altered that ranking. Bhadrachalam remains the smallest constituency with 1.33 lakh electors. However, Sanathnagar has dropped to second place with 1.39 lakh electors, followed by Secunderabad Cantonment with 1.40 lakh and Charminar with 1.43 lakh. Aswaraopeta, with 1.44 lakh electors, completes the list of the five smallest constituencies in the state.The trend becomes even more striking when the ranking is expanded to the 10 smallest constituencies. Bellampalli stands sixth with 1.59 lakh electors, followed by Amberpet at 1.62 lakh, Goshamahal at 1.65 lakh, Secunderabad at 1.66 lakh and Chennur at 1.69 lakh.As a result, Hyderabad district now accounts for six of Telangana’s 10 smallest assembly constituencies: Sanathnagar, Secunderabad Cantonment, Charminar, Amberpet, Goshamahal and Secunderabad.The shift has been driven largely by the scale of ASDD exclusions in these urban constituencies. Sanathnagar’s electorate shrank from 2.53 lakh to 1.39 lakh after 1.14 lakh electors, or 44.9%, were excluded. Secunderabad Cantonment declined from 2.45 lakh to 1.40 lakh, a reduction of more than one lakh electors, or 42.7%.Charminar fell from 2.38 lakh to 1.43 lakh after 94,177 electors, nearly 39.6%, were excluded under the ASDD exercise.6 seats lose 6.46 lakh electorsSimilar declines were recorded in other Hyderabad constituencies. Amberpet’s electorate dropped from 2.82 lakh to 1.62 lakh, a reduction of 42.6%. Goshamahal fell from 2.75 lakh to 1.65 lakh, down 40%, while Secunderabad declined from 2.69 lakh to 1.66 lakh, a reduction of 38.1%.Collectively, these six Hyderabad constituencies lost around 6.46 lakh electors following the revision exercise.The contrast is particularly evident when compared with traditionally small rural and tribal constituencies such as Bhadrachalam and Aswaraopeta, which witnessed relatively lower reductions.Bhadrachalam’s electorate declined by 12.9%, from 1.53 lakh to 1.33 lakh, while Aswaraopeta recorded a 9.6% drop, falling from 1.60 lakh to 1.44 lakh electors.The draft roll has effectively redrawn Telangana’s constituency-size map, placing several Hyderabad segments that were previously among the state’s larger urban constituencies alongside long-standing low electorate rural and tribal seats at the bottom of the electorate table.
