Silchar: A fast-track court in Cachar district has sentenced two brothers to life imprisonment for murdering a youth in 2022.Additional sessions judge Kiranlal Baishnab convicted Hossen Ahmed Laskar (33) and Hassan Ahmed Laskar (28) of South Mohanpur under Sonai police station, under Sections 302 (murder) and 34 (common intention) of the IPC. The court also fined each convict Rs 5,000. Failure to pay will invite an additional six months’ imprisonment.According to the prosecution, Hassan visited Abdul Khalique Laskar’s house on Oct 28, 2022. An argument broke out after Khalique’s younger brother, Abdul Alim Laskar, questioned him about the visit. Hassan later returned with Hossen, who was carrying a dao, while Hassan had a wooden stick. They entered Alim’s room and attacked him.Alim fled towards a paddy field, but the brothers chased him and assaulted him, leaving him critically injured. He was admitted to Silchar Medical College and Hospital, where he died on Oct 30.Khalique lodged an FIR at Sonai police station. Police filed a chargesheet after investigation. The court rejected the defence’s claim of false implication over a land dispute and convicted the brothers based on witness testimonies and circumstantial evidence. The sentence was pronounced on Wednesday.
