Ahmedabad: GTU without permanent exam director for 17 years

Ahmedabad: Gujarat’s largest technological university, GTU, has been without a permanent examination director for more than 17 years since its establishment in 2007-08, despite conducting examinations for thousands of students across its affiliated colleges every year. The examination director’s post is considered one of the university’s most critical administrative positions, overseeing examinations, result processing and other examination-related functions. However, sources said the university has relied on officials holding additional charge of the post since its inception.Over the years, at least five officials have been assigned the responsibility. Initially, a deputy registrar was given charge of the examination wing. This was followed by the appointment of a professor from a govt college. Later, a professor from Vishwakarma Govt Engineering College was brought on deputation to manage examination-related work. Currently, another official is serving as the acting examination director.Despite issuing recruitment advertisements on multiple occasions, the university has been unable to fill the post permanently. The vacancy has persisted through the tenures of four vice-chancellors.The university recently launched another recruitment drive and conducted interviews for the position. However, the exercise failed to produce a successful appointment. Sources said only one candidate applied for the post, but the applicant did not fulfil the prescribed eligibility and selection criteria.
