Jaipur: Jaipur Municipal Corporation Monday told Rajasthan High Court that it is sterilising about 800 stray dogs every month under its Animal Birth Control (ABC) programme and has identified 300 designated feeding points across the city. The submission was made in a status report filed in a suo motu case being heard by the high court to monitor compliance with Supreme Court directions on stray-dog management.According to the report, the corporation is implementing Animal Birth Control Rules, 2023. Under the rules, captured dogs are sterilised, vaccinated and released back at the same location from where they were picked up. The ABC programme is being carried out at the corporation’s dog centre at Jaisinghpura Khor on Delhi Bypass Road through a non-govt organisation selected by tender. The civic body said it has also built additional kennels at the centre to house dogs.The corporation said it has two dog-catcher vehicles to respond to complaints from different parts of Jaipur. “Dogs found to be violent or suffering from disease are taken to the dog centre, where they are kept under veterinary supervision, treated as required and administered anti-rabies vaccination. Unsterilised dogs are also sterilised,” the report said.The status report said the civic body is taking action on complaints involving rabies-affected and aggressive dogs, apart from routine sterilisation and vaccination.As part of compliance with Supreme Court directions, the corporation has identified 300 feeding points and put up public posters at these locations.It has also written to local institutions to prevent the entry of stray dogs into public premises, including railway stations, bus stations, hospitals, schools, universities, playgrounds and medical colleges.The civic body said complaints from such premises are being acted upon. Dogs are captured, sterilised and vaccinated and, as required under the ABC Rules, released back at the same location after the stipulated period.The report also mentions the formation of a local Animal Birth Control Monitoring Committee to oversee the sterilisation and vaccination programme.The corporation informed the court that Rs 2.10 crore was sanctioned for the ABC programme in 2024-25 for the then Municipal Corporation Greater Jaipur, while Rs 1.99 crore was sanctioned for 2025-26.The report said construction of dog shelters at various locations in the municipal area is also under way. The Rajasthan govt assured the court that effective steps are being taken to control the stray-dog population and make urban areas rabies-free.
