Chandigarh: The Chandigarh municipal corporation collected over ₹42.6 lakh more in paid parking revenue during the first seven months of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025.Between January and July 2026, the civic body earned over ₹8.6 crore from paid parking, up from ₹8.2 crore collected during the corresponding months last year. This reflects an average monthly revenue increase of over ₹6 lakh.Official sources attributed the financial jump primarily to the introduction of citywide monthly passes—priced at ₹500 for four-wheelers and ₹250 for two-wheelers—along with stricter enforcement against revenue leakage.An official source told TOI, “Since good number of people have shown their interest to take the monthly passes, it worked for the authority. Besides the common people, a good number of traders and people involved in commercial activities have come forward to take these monthly passes to avail the parking facility in all the parking lots through only one pass.”The one-pass system was launched in January 2026 in collaboration with a private bank, offering access to all MC-run lots under a single pass. To drive adoption, MC partnered with BSNL to send promotional text messages to nearly 9 lakh vehicle owners with Chandigarh registrations.Additionally, following an internal assessment revealing revenue shortfalls, the civic body deployed engineering staff across all parking lots to monitor employees and plug collection gaps.
