A request to use the toilet turned into an unlikely escape from a police station for a 32-year-old theft accused, who allegedly gave a sentry constable the slip and fled from Thakurganj police station. Four police teams launched a search and caught him near Chaupatiya Road within 24 hours, officials said on Tuesday.
Lucknow: A request to use the toilet turned into an unlikely escape from a police station for a 32-year-old theft accused, who allegedly gave a sentry constable the slip and fled from Thakurganj police station. However, the escape did not last long and cops caught him near Chaupatiya Road in Chowk within 24 hours.Shanu alias Mohd Samad was arrested on Aug 9 night for a burglary in Niwajganj. Police said he was identified through CCTV footage, other evidence and information from informers.Police said Shanu had sneaked into the house through the roof around 2.30am on Aug 7 and stole cash kept in an almirah and a mobile phone. A case under sections 305A and 331(4) of the BNS was registered at Thakurganj police station on Aug 8.“After his arrest, Shanu was kept in the police station lock-up. On Monday morning, he asked to use the toilet located within the station premises. He was taken there under the supervision of a constable posted on sentry duty,” said Omveer Singh, SHO, Thakurganj.Police said the accused managed to deceive the constable and escaped from custody. A fresh case under BNS Sections 261 and 262 was subsequently registered at Thakurganj police station, and four teams were formed to track him.The search ended on Tuesday when the Thakurganj police team arrested Shanu.Police said the stolen mobile was recovered from him.“Shanu has theft and house-break-in cases against him from 2016, besides cases registered at Thakurganj in 2024 and 2025,” he added.The cases include offences relating to theft, house-breaking, possession of stolen property, causing hurt and criminal intimidation, police said.
