Navi Mumbai: Amnesty scheme approved for water bill arrears of Rs 64 crore

Navi Mumbai: The general assembly of Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) approved the implementation of an amnesty scheme to recover long-pending water tax dues and encourage citizens to clear their outstanding bills. According to the decision taken in the meeting, the city currently has water tax arrears of around Rs 64 crore. Of this total, approximately Rs 20 crore is made up of penalties and fines charged on delayed payments.NMMC leader, Sagar Naik, said the administration expects a strong response once the scheme is rolled out, as many defaulters may be willing to pay their principal dues if the penalty burden is reduced. Under the scheme, 90% of the fine on water tax arrears will be waived, providing significant relief to consumers who have accumulated penalties over time. The main objective of the scheme is to improve revenue collection while offering a practical pathway for residents to regularise their accounts. By reducing the fine component, the civic body aims to increase voluntary compliance, speed up recovery of outstanding amounts, and strengthen the financial position of the water department. Residents with pending water tax payments are expected to benefit from the waiver by paying the remaining amount within the time period specified by the municipal administration. Officials believe that the amnesty approach will help settle long-standing dues more efficiently.
