Civic body steps up repair work at road cave-in site

Ludhiana: The municipal corporation (MC) has stepped up repair work at the road cave-in site in Kitchlu Nagar, with officials now moving ahead with the construction of a retaining wall to stabilise the affected stretch. Earlier, a wall was constructed along the house that was impacted when the road collapsed.Officials said that after securing the house, they are now constructing a concrete wall around the sewer line and building a manhole. However, the road remains closed. They added that one side of the road is likely to be opened for traffic in the next three to four days.Work to cover and stabilise the other side of the collapsed road is also underway. The civic body has accelerated repair efforts to prevent further damage and ensure commuter safety. Experts from Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College assisted in the construction of the concrete slab near the affected house.MC sub-divisional officer Arjun Sikka said the repair work is being carried out in phases, with strengthening of the retaining structure being the immediate priority.He added that once work on the other side is completed, the civic body will begin restoring the road surface, though it will take some time before the stretch becomes fully motorable again.The road first caved in on Aug 3 and was repaired the same night. However, a portion of it collapsed again on Aug 5.A trolley got stuck in the caved-in section and, when pulled out, left behind a large crater. Officials have been stationed at the site continuously over the past three to four days.
