Rajkot: A 39-year-old lawyer from Bhavnagar allegedly lost Rs 75,000 from his credit card after a cyberfraudster gained unauthorised access to his mobile phone through an APK file.The lawyer lodged a complaint at the Bhavnagar cyber police station against an unidentified person under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and provisions of the Information Technology Act.According to the complaint, the incident occurred on April 26, when the lawyer was at Subhashnagar Chowk between noon and 1pm. His mobile phone suddenly displayed a notification indicating that a system update was available. Shortly afterwards, he received an alert stating that Rs 75,000 had been debited from his Axis Bank credit card.Soon after the transaction alert, the phone was automatically reset. When the lawyer managed to restart the device nearly 30 minutes later, he found that all the data stored on it had been erased.He then checked his banking and Amazon accounts and discovered 10 transactions of Rs 7,500 each. The transactions were for BGMI e-gift cards for online gaming, purchased through Amazon’s instant delivery service. Another 10 similar transactions had failed. The Amazon orders were placed using an unknown email id.The lawyer immediately contacted the bank’s customer care and reported the unauthorised transactions. Following the bank’s advice, he also registered a complaint with the cybercrime helpline, 1930, on the same day.The lawyer told police that a few days before the fraud, he had received an APK file from an unknown source on his mobile phone. He suspects that opening the file enabled the accused to gain unauthorised access to his device and carry out the fraudulent transactions.Police have registered the case and started an investigation to trace the accused behind the APK file, the email id used for the purchases and the accounts or devices involved in the transactions.
