Lucknow: A Barabanki court has sentenced a man and his parents to seven years’ imprisonment each in the dowry death of his wife. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 35,000 each on the convicts.District and sessions judge Pratima Srivastava on Friday convicted Chhotkan, 35, and his parents Shanti Devi, 58, and Bhallu, 62.According to prosecution lawyers Amit Awasthi and Ashish Gupta, the case was registered on Jan 5, 2021, after the victim’s father approached the police following the death of his daughter, who was married to Chhotkan.The prosecution alleged that the woman was subjected to repeated physical and mental harassment by her husband and in-laws over dowry.According to the prosecution, the woman was found hanging at her husband’s home on Jan 5, 2021. Her father alleged she was murdered and her body was hung to make it appear as a suicide. He subsequently lodged a complaint, following which police registered a case.
