Panaji: To reduce dependence on flower imports from other states, the zonal agriculture office (ZAO) in Sattari is set to distribute one lakh hybrid marigold saplings from Aug 20 under the state sector scheme.The initiative aims to increase the area under marigold cultivation in Valpoi from 5 hectares to 7 hectares this year.“We are optimistic that the expansion programme will reduce Goa’s dependence on marigold flowers sourced from outside the state. This year, nearly 90% of local festive flower requirements in Sattari could be met through locally grown marigolds, with complete self-sufficiency expected within the next two years if farmer participation continues to grow,” said zonal agriculture officer Vishwanath Gawas.The saplings being distributed now are intended for Dussehra and Diwali, as the crop requires about three months to mature.Farmers will receive two hybrid marigold varieties—Tennis Ball, a yellow variety, and Ashtaganda, an orange variety. The seedlings are sourced from nurseries in Kolhapur.“The hybrid varieties are expected to deliver higher yields, with production estimated between 4kg and 7.5kg per plant under favourable conditions. We expect to expand the cultivation area to improve local flower availability during the festive season,” he said.Last year, the department distributed 75,000 seedlings to about 120 farmers in Sattari. This year, it has increased the distribution to one lakh seedlings, targeting at least 300 farmers. Farmers are eligible for a subsidy of Rs 5 per seedling, subject to a minimum buy of 750 seedlings. Home gardeners and small-scale cultivators can also buy one or two trays of seedlings.“Even planting 10 to 20 marigold plants in a kitchen garden can provide enough flowers during Dussehra and Diwali,” said Gawas. “The plants are capable of producing flowers continuously for up to four months,” he said.The department also plans to share details of growers and the quantity of flowers available in each panchayat via WhatsApp groups for direct contact between buyers and cultivators.
