Jewellery store owner foils armed robbery near Bengaluru, injured in shooting

Bengaluru: A movie-style heist attempt played out in broad daylight Thursday as two armed men, posing as customers, barged into a jewellery store at Dobbespet near Nelamangala, opened fire at the owner, and fled empty-handed after he heroically fought them off.The victim, Kunnaram, owner of Prem Shiva Jewellers, sustained a bullet wound to his leg. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors confirmed he was out of danger. A staff member present inside the store escaped unhurt.According to police, the incident took place at 2.24pm. CCTV footage recovered from the store shows two men arriving in a Mahindra Bolero and casually walking into the establishment. Seconds later, they whipped out a firearm at Kunnaram, who was having lunch, and attempted to smash open the display counters to loot gold ornaments.Despite being caught off guard, a brave Kunnaram put up stiff resistance, hurling nearby items at the miscreants to thwart the robbery. Surprised, the robbers fired two rounds — one struck Kunnaram in the leg, while the second lodged in a wall. Realising their strategy had backfired, the duo panicked, abandoned their plan, and sped off toward Doddaballapur in their getaway vehicle. The sudden gunshots sent shockwaves through the bustling commercial street, triggering panic among neighbouring shopkeepers. Upon receiving an alert, Bengaluru Rural superintendent of police Chandrakanth, along with officers from Dobbespet police station, rushed to the spot accompanied by forensic experts and canine units.“The miscreants failed to make off with any valuables because of the swift resistance of the shopowner. We’ve gathered CCTV footage from the store as well as surrounding routes, and special teams have been formed to track down the Bolero and apprehend the suspects,” Chandrakanth said.
