Thane: A 77-year-old woman died after she is suspected to have fallen from the balcony of her 21st-floor apartment onto the podium of a residential tower in Majiwada, Thane West, on Wednesday afternoon.Police said they have registered an accidental death report and all possible angles, including suicide, are being examined to ascertain the exact cause of the incident.The deceased was identified as Kumudha Ramesh Shetty (77), a resident of Savana Tower, a 23-storey residential building near Vasant Lawns, opposite New Horizon School.Police said they received information about the incident at 3.45 pm. Preliminary inquiries revealed that the woman allegedly lost her balance and fell from the balcony of flat no. 2101 onto the podium at the second-floor level of the building.Personnel from the Vartak Nagar police station, along with the fire brigade and the Thane disaster management cell, rushed to the spot. A fire engine, rescue vehicle, hydraulic platform, utility vehicle, ambulance and hearse van were deployed for the operation. With the assistance of the fire brigade and disaster management personnel, her body was retrieved from the podium and handed over to the police.Police said the body has been sent to Thane District Civil Hospital for post-mortem examination. Police said they are recording the statements of the deceased’s family members and are inquiring into the circumstances leading to the fall.
