Gurgaon: Residents of Pyramid Urban Homes in Sector 67 blocked Sohna Road on Wednesday in protest against a two-day-long power cut at the society, which, they said has completely disrupted their daily schedule. The protesters said poor electrical infrastructure in the housing complex was causing repeated power failures and blamed the management for it.Police were called in to defuse the situation and disperse the crowd. In an effort to resolve the situation, the society’s housing manager was called and diesel gensets were arranged. Power supply through diesel generators (DG) was restored at around 5 pm, while grid supply was also resumed around the same time. However, due to intermittent tripping, the society continues to rely on DG power for electricity supply till Wednesday night, residents said.According to residents, their houses did not have power from 3pm on Monday due to a fault in the power infrastructure connecting the society to the substation. They alleged that despite repeated complaints, the management failed to restore supply or provide a satisfactory explanation.As a result, some families were forced to spend their nights at hotels while others shifted to relatives’ homes. Residents said the prolonged outage disrupted work-from-home schedules, online classes and access to basic amenities, including drinking water.“No appliances are working. Even RO systems are down, forcing us to buy bottled water. With no solution in sight, we were compelled to come out on the streets and protest,” said a resident, Gitika Thareja.There are more than 1,300 flats in the society. Residents said the builder collected around Rs 90,000 from each buyer for electrical infrastructure at the time of possession but allegedly used substandard material, resulting in recurring breakdowns.“I had to send my family to a relative’s house because it became impossible to stay without electricity. My son’s online classes were disrupted as we could not charge laptops and mobile phones. This is not a one-time incident. Frequent power cuts have become a recurring problem here, often lasting more than six hours, and the situation worsens during the monsoon. We demand an independent audit of the society’s electrical infrastructure and accountability for these repeated outages,” said Narendra Tewatia, another resident.
DHBVN said the fault occurred in cables inside the premises while the management said the issue was with the supply lines controlled by DHBVN
Meanwhile, the power outage sparked a blame game between the society’s management and the state electricity supplier. A Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (DHBVN) official said the fault which led to the power cut occurred within the complex. “The issue was traced to the 33/0.4 kV transformer located within the society premises, where a high tension cable developed a fault and burst at two locations. DHBVN has been extending all necessary assistance, including permits and technical support, to facilitate restoration. However, the operation and maintenance of the internal electrical network rests with the builder,” he said.The society management, however, said the fault was in the external electricity supply lines. “We would like to clarify that the outage has been caused by a fault in the external electricity supply lines under the jurisdiction of the government electricity department and is not related to the society’s internal electrical infrastructure. Our team has been in constant coordination with the concerned authorities and is pursuing early restoration of normal power supply. DG backup is being provided to residents as per operational capacity until the external power supply is restored,” they said in a statement.
