Gurgaon: A 31-year-old woman was found dead in Sector 39 on Monday. A day later, police registered a case against three people, including her husband, based on a complaint lodged by her father.Khushbu Gupta, who was from UP, had been living with her husband Himanshu (35) in Jharsa for the past two years. She was found dead at her rented accommodation in Sector 39.On Tuesday, Himanshu — a tuition teacher for Classes 11 and 12 — was taken into custody and was being questioned.According to the FIR registered at Gurgaon Sadar police station on Tuesday night, Khushbu’s father Arvind Kumar Gupta alleged that his daughter was subjected to continuous harassment and cruelty for dowry after her marriage to Himanshu. Arvind said that the marriage was solemnised in Varanasi according to Hindu customs. The complaint also names the victim’s mother-in-law Sunita Devi and sister-in-law Aparajita Gupta as accused.“Based on the father’s complaint and the preliminary findings, police registered the FIR under sections 80 (dowry death) and 3(5) (common intention) of BNS against the husband, mother-in-law and sister-in-law,” an officer said, adding, “The cause of death will be ascertained after the autopsy and forensic analysis.”He alleged that within days of the wedding, his daughter began facing harassment for dowry from her husband and his family members. Despite repeated interventions by the complainant to resolve the disputes, the harassment continued. The complainant said Khushbu visited her parental home on July 29 and returned to the city with her husband by train on Aug 2.“On Aug 3, at 3pm, Khushbu called her father — she was in tears — and told him that her husband had assaulted her. Concerned about her safety, Arvind later contacted his son-in-law around 11pm. Himanshu told him that Khushbu had fallen ill and was being taken to a hospital, assuring him that he would speak later,” an officer said. When the complainant called again around 11.30pm, the phone was answered by one of Himanshu’s friends, who informed him that Khushbu had died. After receiving the information, the victim’s family travelled to the city and approached Jharsa police outpost, seeking legal action and an autopsy.Police said they received a brought-dead memo from Artemis Hospital in Sector 51, following which the body was shifted to the mortuary. “The crime scene at the couple’s residence in Sector 39 was secured, while forensic and fingerprint experts were called to examine the spot,” the officer added.
