Firing over road rage in Ropar, 1 held; no Amritpal link, say police
Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh

Ropar: Shots were fired during a drunken road rage clash in Punjab’s Ropar district on Monday night, police said on Tuesday, dismissing social media rumours linking the incident to jailed Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh.Viral posts claimed Amritpal’s supporters had attacked and tried to kidnap the complainant, Varinder Singh of Salempur. “There is no Amritpal connection. Neither the complainant’s statement nor our investigation reveals any ties to him,” said SHO Simranjeet Singh.Police arrested Jasveer Singh of Samroli village, who was allegedly intoxicated and travelling with his family. He was booked under non-bailable charges, including Section 109 of BNS and the Arms Act.“A verbal spat over right of way escalated and the accused fired multiple rounds near Rasulpur and Salempur—some in the air, others at the complainant’s vehicle,” the SHO said. No one was injured.Police said the rumour likely arose from Varinder Singh’s history with Amritpal. In Feb 2023, Varinder filed the first-ever FIR against Amritpal, alleging abduction and assault in Ajnala. Days later, Amritpal and armed supporters stormed the Ajnala police station to demand the release of a co-accused.
