Woman gets life term for killing two minor daughters in Cachar

Silchar: A fast-track court in Silchar has sentenced a 24-year-old woman to life imprisonment for murdering her two minor daughters in a case that had shocked residents of Cachar district.Additional sessions judge (fast-track court) Bankim Sharma on Thursday convicted Azmira Begum Laskar and awarded her life term along with a fine of Rs 20,000. In default of payment, she will have to undergo an additional six months of imprisonment.According to the prosecution, the incident occurred on Sept 1, 2023, at Baurikandi under Kachudaram Police Station. Azmira was found guilty of killing her daughters — three-year-old Rajima Begum and 10-month-old Fatima Begum.The complaint was lodged by the children’s father, Babul Haque Laskar, who told police that he had married Azmira for the second time in the hope of having a son. However, they had two daughters.Babul had no children with his first wife. The family, including his first wife, lived together in the same house.Police said domestic discord had escalated prior to the incident, with Azmira briefly returning to her parental home. She was brought back around 15 days before the crime.On the night of the incident, Azmira slept in a room with the children. The next morning, Babul found them lying unconscious with their clothes wet. When questioned, Azmira reportedly confessed to the crime.Investigators said she had taken the children to a pond in front of the house at dawn, tied them with a scarf, and drowned them before bringing the bodies back inside.Following her arrest, police carried out a detailed investigation and filed a chargesheet. Based on witness testimonies and evidence, the court delivered the verdict.
