Uncle held for beating teen niece to death over ‘stolen jewellery’

Amritsar: Police on Tuesday arrested a 26-year-old man for allegedly calling his 15-year-old niece to his Amritsar house and, with two associates, thrashing her to death over suspicion that she had stolen gold jewellery.The accused, Vineet Kumar alias Sony, was arrested by the Gate Hakima police, who also recovered the stick allegedly used in the crime. Raids are on to arrest the two other accused.Amritsar commissioner of police Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said a case was registered on July 15 under Sections 103, 35 and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) on the complaint of the victim’s brother.According to the investigation, Vineet, the girl’s maternal uncle, had called the siblings from Jalandhar after sending them Rs 2,000 through Google Pay when they told him about their financial difficulties.After they reached his house, Vineet allegedly accused the girl of stealing gold jewellery and rings, took her to a first-floor room and locked the door from inside. Hearing her screams, the girl’s brother and maternal aunt rushed to the room and knocked repeatedly, but the accused did not open the door, police said.Investigators alleged that Vineet later called two associates, who joined him in assaulting the girl. When the door was finally opened, she was found unconscious with multiple injuries and was declared dead.Bhullar said the stick allegedly used in the assault was recovered on the accused’s disclosure. Police said Vineet, a Class XII pass who works as a labourer, has a previous NDPS Act case registered against him in 2018 at C-Division police station in Amritsar.
