Guwahati: Assam legislators, barring Raijor Dal’s two members, on Tuesday pledged one month’s salary for flood relief and rehabilitation.Assam has 126 MLAs, of which Raijor Dal made no announcement, though MLA Mehboob Muktar was present in the House. Raijor Dal president Akhil Gogoi, who represents from flood ravaged Sivasagar, was not present in the House as he was busy in extending help to the affected families of his constituency.Speaker Ranjeet Kumar Dass said he and deputy speaker Habbey Teron would donate a month’s salary. “Besides us, all assembly secretariat staff will donate one day’s salary for the relief and rehabilitation of the victims,” he added.BJP, Congress, AIUDF, AGP, BPF and TMC legislators joined the initiative.AIUDF MLA Mazibur Rahman, TMC MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed and Congress MLA Zakir Hussain Sikdar raised concerns over flood devastation in Sivasagar, Charaideo and Jorhat and sought adequate relief and rehabilitation.Parliamentary affairs minister Pijush Hazarika said the govt was making every effort to support affected families.“The flood was unnatural and unprecedented. Otherwise, we have been able to control the natural floods, which occur in the state during every monsoon, by at least 80%. Every department is working relentlessly and standing by the people,” he said.Hazarika acknowledged difficulties in delivering relief to several places but said efforts were on to reach everyone.
