Kolkata: “In the changed circumstances… let people remain in peace,” Calcutta High Court observed on Monday saying it was not inclined to proceed with Suvendu Adhikari’s contempt plea against former speaker Biman Banerjee over security provided to MLAs on the assembly premises.Adhikari had filed the case before Justice Amrita Sinha when he was leader of the opposition (LoP). The main prayer was for quashing of a notification dated May 6, 2021, restricting the entry of central security forces into the assembly house precincts along with their protectees.On Aug 28, 2025, Justice Sinha noted that assembly secretary had intimated the advocate general that the security arrangement was maintained equally for all members of the legislative assembly, irrespective of their political affiliation. Adhikari filed a contempt application stating that the same was not followed despite the “undertaking”.Adhikari became the CM after BJP’s assembly poll victory in Bengal on May 4.On Monday, Justice Sinha asked his counsel Bilwadal Bhattacharya, who is now the additional advocate general representing the state: “In the changed circumstances, would you like to argue?… Right now they (alleged contemnors) won’t be in a position to undo whatever has been done.”But Bhattacharya urged that the alleged contemnors should “tender an apology”. “Kindly issue a rule so that they can come and explain why it was done. This conduct… first giving an undertaking to the court, secondly, violating that immediately, thereby arguing about maintainability, and now non-appearance,” he urged.“This is going to eat up a lot of valuable time of the court which the court doesn’t want,” Justice Sinha told Bhattacharya. No one represented the alleged contemnors.The court finally disposed of the petition.
