Jaipur: A Rajasthan University student continued his hunger strike for the fourth consecutive day Sunday, demanding a Rajasthani language department for postgraduate students.Shubham Rewar began his indefinite fast Thursday in solidarity with nationwide student protests over alleged irregularities in the education system. Although the Cockroach Janta Party later withdrew its agitation, Rewar continued his strike, shifting the focus to the demand for institutional support for Rajasthani language studies.“Foreign language courses are available at the university, but there is no regular postgraduate course for Rajasthani. The language is offered only as a self-financed course, which costs around Rs 50,000, while courses in French and Spanish cost between Rs 2,000 and Rs 4,000.

If the university is implementing the National Education Policy, why is our native language not being given priority?” Rewar said.He claimed that the state govt is preparing to introduce Marathi in govt educational institutions following Governor Haribhau Bagde’s directions, while universities in Rajasthan still lack a dedicated department for the state’s native language.“There are many students who want to pursue master’s and PhD programmes in Rajasthani and undertake research in the language, but they are not being given that opportunity,” he said.Rewar also demanded the restoration of student union elections, which have not been held in the state since 2022.
