Dibrugarh: A six-member central team on Sunday began assessing flood damage in four of Assam’s worst-hit districts.The Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT) first visited Sumoni village in Charaideo district, inspecting inundated homes and fields and interacting with affected families. It reviewed rescue, relief and rehabilitation efforts and assessed damage to crops, property and infrastructure.The team comprises M Ramachandrudu, joint secretary, home ministry; Sanjeev Kumar Suman, director, Central Water Commission; Mahesh Kumar, joint director, Flood Control Division, finance ministry; Prabhat Kumar, deputy secretary, rural development ministry; Dheeraj, regional officer, road transport and highways ministry; and SVSP Sharma, scientist, National Remote Sensing Centre.

Charaideo district commissioner Neha Yadav briefed the team on relief camps, supply distribution and infrastructure damage.“We have shared detailed data on the damage to roads, embankments and agricultural land. This assessment is crucial for us to secure adequate central support,” Yadav said.The team will visit Charaideo, Sivasagar, Jorhat and Golaghat before concluding its assessment on July 29. The floods have claimed lives, displaced thousands of families and damaged homes, farmland, roads and embankments across the four districts, officials said.The team will meet district administrations, visit affected villages and relief camps, and inspect damaged infrastructure. Satellite-based damage assessments by the National Remote Sensing Centre will also inform its evaluation.Its findings and the state govt’s report will help the Centre determine financial assistance under the National Disaster Response Fund framework.
