Varanasi: A joint team of the Government Railway Police (GRP), Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Railway Intelligence on Friday detained two men and seized jewellery worth ₹1.95 crore at Varanasi Cantt railway station.The duo — Raunak (23) and Gautam (24), both residents of Surat in Gujarat — were handed over to the Income Tax department for further investigation.According to police, the suspects were coming from platforms 6 and 7 when personnel on patrol became suspicious of their behaviour. A search of their bags led to the recovery of gold, silver and diamond jewellery.During questioning, the two claimed they worked for a Gujarat-based jewellery company and travelled across the country carrying samples for prospective buyers. They told police that they were taking the jewellery consignment to Jaunpur.GRP in charge Rajol Nagar said documents related to the jewellery were also recovered. However, police found it suspicious that such a large quantity of jewellery was being transported without security arrangements or prior intimation to local authorities. The company had not informed police about the movement of the consignment.The Income Tax department has been informed and is verifying the seized jewellery against the documents recovered from the suspects. Police are also coordinating with Jaunpur Police as part of the investigation.
