Noida: An 83-year-old woman was allegedly placed under “digital arrest” and cheated of Rs 18.5 lakh by cyber fraudsters posing as Maharashtra Police officers, who told her that her bank account had been used for money laundering and criminal activities.The victim, a retired doctor, remained on call with the callers for five days, who threatened her with arrest unless she cooperated with the “investigation”.According to her complaint, she received a call from an unknown number on July 13. The caller said that a bank account, opened using her Aadhaar details, was being used for criminal activities. He then connected the victim to another person, who posed as a Maharashtra Police officer.Scared by the threats, she shared details of her bank accounts, fixed deposits, post office savings and other investments. On July 14, she transferred Rs 10.5 lakh to a bank account. Three days later, she transferred Rs 8 lakh to another account.When the scamsters stopped calling her, she realised that she had been cheated and approached the cyber police.A case was registered with the cyber crime police station. Police urged people to remain vigilant against scams, stressing that no law enforcement agency conducts investigation or demands money over phone or a video call.
