Kolkata: Cloudy sky with a couple of light spells kept the city temperature below normal on Tuesday. The Met office said the city will continue to encounter spells of light to moderate rain in the next couple of days as the monsoon trough at present is passing through South Bengal along with an upper air trough.“The monsoon trough is now passing through our region along with an upper air trough. Parts of south Bengal will continue to get spells of rain for the next two to three days. In Kolkata, we can expect cloudiness with spells of light to moderate rain,” said meteorologist HR Biswas, head, Regional Meteorological Centre, Kolkata.According to IMD, the monsoon trough now passes through Sri Ganganagar, Rohtak, Hamirpur, Sidhi, Ranchi, Digha and thence south-eastwards towards Northwest Bay of Bengal. There is also an upper air cyclonic circulation over West Central Bay of Bengal and adjoining north Coastal Andhra Pradesh. These weather synoptics are making the monsoon active over south Bengal. Met officials expect some heavy spells in some South Bengal districts while the rainfall activity in north Bengal is getting reduced gradually. On Monday, spells of heavy rain hit parts of central and northern Kolkata and the fringes while parts of south Kolkata encountered only light rain. On Tuesday, most parts of the city received only light rain or drizzle till late into the evening. The light rain and cloud cover pushed the maximum temperature further down to 30.1°C, which was close to two notches below normal. The minimum temperature at 26.5°C, however, balanced bang on the normal mark on the Celsius scale.“The cloudy sky with spells of light to moderate rain in between will continue to shield the city from heat. The mercury is expected to hover around or slightly below the normal mark for now,” added Biswas.
