Hyd family seeks urgent US visas as Sohail battles for life after alleged hate attack

Hyderabad: Days after Hyderabad resident Syed Sohail Uddin was stabbed 15 times at a mall in Utah, US, allegedly for being Muslim, his relatives in India say he remains in the intensive care unit (ICU) in critical condition. He is expected to take more than a month to recover, they added.Speaking to TOI, family members said Sohail’s wife, Amrin Firdous, who is the sole caregiver, is under severe duress. “She is in the US on a student visa and has now been left to look after her husband and two young children, aged two and five, all by herself,” said Amrin’s brother, Muhammad Asmad, from Musheerabad. “Since the attack, she has been experiencing episodes of low blood pressure and fainting while trying to manage the situation alone,” he added. The family has now appealed to the Union government to facilitate emergency visas so they can travel to the US and support the couple. Majlis Bachao Tehreek (MBT) spokesperson, Amjadullah Khan, said he too has written to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and the US Consulate General in Hyderabad, urging them to facilitate emergency visas for Sohail’s elderly parents, his brother, and his brother-in-law, who all live in Hyderabad. The family said Sohail and Amrin moved to the US in 2024.Recalling the horrific incident, Muhammad said no one should be targeted because of their faith. “It is heartbreaking that someone can be attacked in the name of religion. Sohail is a kind person who has never harmed anyone. Our only concern now is to reach him as soon as possible and support his wife and children during this difficult time,” he added.Meanwhile, in a video released from the hospital and circulated through the handle of Sohail’s co-worker, Luna Nunez, another friend, Addy, said that Sohail underwent surgery on his hand, during which doctors repaired “six tendons and two veins”. “He is expected to recover in about six months and will require physiotherapy thereafter. Doctors are also closely monitoring his heart,” Addy said.Sohail also briefly spoke in the video, thanking everyone who helped him during the “critical situation”.The GoFundMe page created to raise funds for his treatment has almost reached its target of USD 350k.
