Man brought to Surat from Mumbai jail in Rs 2.15 crore fraud

Surat: The economic offences wing of the Surat police has arrested Purshottam Chavan (55) from Mumbai’s Arthur Road jail in connection with a Rs 2.15 crore cheating case. Chavan, who was already incarcerated for his involvement in a high-profile money laundering scam, was brought to the city on a production warrant amid tight security.The arrest follows a complaint filed by Surat textile trader Prayag Jariwala. According to the police, Chavan and his associates, Dipak More and Umesh Manjrekar, allegedly conspired to dupe Jariwala’s sister, Alpa Lakhlani, by promising her a flat in Mumbai under a cheap govt quota.The accused collected Rs 2.15 crore from the victim and handed over a forged Maharashtra govt allotment letter to execute the fraud. Following the complaint filed on June 1, Surat police initiated the transfer process to secure Chavan’s custody for further investigation and to trace the remaining stolen funds.
