Light rain breaks city’s dry spell, but heat persists

Ahmedabad: After a prolonged dry spell, Ahmedabad finally received a light shower on Thursday, recording an average of 2mm of rainfall. While the brief rain brought some respite from the sultry weather, temperatures remained well above normal and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) indicated that widespread, sustained rainfall was unlikely in the immediate future.The city continued to experience hot and humid conditions despite the showers. The maximum temperature settled at 37 degrees celsius, which was 3.3 degrees above normal, while the minimum temperature was 27.5 degrees celsius, 1.3 degrees above normal. Relative humidity remained high at 71% in the morning and 69% in the evening as partly cloudy skies prevailed through most of the day.Rain in Ahmedabad was part of scattered showers reported across Gujarat, with 92 talukas recording at least 1mm during the day. Kamrej in Surat district received the highest rainfall at 46mm, followed by Rapar in Kutch with 43mm. Mangrol and Bardoli in Surat district recorded 38mm each, among other places that witnessed moderate showers.According to the IMD forecast, only light to moderate rain was likely over different parts of Gujarat over the next 24 hours.The weather department also warned that isolated pockets of the state could continue to experience above-normal maximum temperatures despite intermittent showers. Across Gujarat, maximum temperatures in most cities and towns remained between 31 and 35 degrees celsius.
