Silchar: The Silchar branch of the Northeast Frontier Railway Employees’ Union (NFREU) has urged Cachar police to act against alleged illegal activities, recurring thefts and deteriorating security at New Silchar railway station, claiming the situation poses a threat to railway employees, their families and railway property. In a memorandum submitted to the superintendent of police, Cachar, the union alleged that the station’s elevated location, away from public view, has made parts of the premises a haven for anti-social elements.Branch secretary Mrinal Kanti Mondal said miscreants regularly gather at the station to consume narcotics and alcohol and that the area has become a hotspot for anti-social elements, resulting in repeated incidents of theft and unauthorised entry into nearby railway quarters. The union said it raised the issue with railway authorities on several occasions and that the Railway Protection Force (RPF) conducted periodic drives, but the situation has shown little improvement. The union urged the district police to register the complaint and launch an investigation. It also demanded regular patrolling in and around the station, strict action against those involved in drug abuse, alcohol consumption and other illegal activities, and enhanced security at the station and adjoining railway quarters.Mondal said prompt intervention by the district administration was essential to ensure the safety of railway employees, their families and railway property and to prevent further incidents.
