GU marks Van Mahotsav with plantation drive on Assam-Meghalaya border

Guwahati: Gauhati University NSS Cell, in collaboration with Narangi Anchalik Mahavidyalaya, observed Van Mahotsav 2026 from July 1 to 7 with a focus on promoting afforestation and creating awareness on environmental conservation.The week-long programme began with university vice -chancellor Nani Gopal Mahanta planting a sapling on the university campus. The initiative reaffirmed the university’s commitment to environmental sustainability and ecological conservation.As part of the celebrations, a plantation drive was organised at Dondoral, located along the Assam-Meghalaya border at Sonapur. The programme saw enthusiastic participation from NSS volunteers and local residents, who joined hands to plant saplings and spread the message of environmental protection, Gauhati University said in a statement.Ranjan Kr Kakati, secretary, University Classes of the varsity, led the NSS volunteers to Dondoral and urged them to take an active role in conserving and restoring the environment. Stressing that tree plantation is a collective responsibility, he encouraged young people to become ambassadors of sustainable development.Around 40 volunteers from Narangi Anchalik Mahavidyalaya and the university campus took part in the plantation drive.
