CID questions Baruipur IO, takes him to encounter spot

Kolkata: The CID team probing the encounter death of rape-murder accused Prabash Mondal questioned the investigating officer of Baruipour Police on Friday in the presence of forensic experts. The CID team took the IO to the spot, where the latter had taken Prabash on Wednesday late night to reconstruct the rape-and -murder, so that they can fix up the encounter spot. The deceased was in police custody when the incident took place. The state agency sleuths asked the IO to point out the distance between him and his five other Baruipur police district members who accompanied the accused to the spot on Wednesday. The IO was also asked to indicate the direction where Prabash was trying to flee. The forensic team hunted for samples amid knee-deep water, even as they used scanners to find bullet traces in the accumulated water, the overnight rain making their job all the more difficult. The entire process was videographed.Earlier, the CID officials also visited the Baruipur PS to collect documents and speak to the district police officers there. The CID also wanted to know the exact timings — the officers who fixed the time of reconstruction, the time they left the police station and the time they were informed of the encounter from the spot.Following the Ministry of home affairs guidelines, the CID is legally required to execute specific forensic and administrative protocols. Investigators must at least secure colour photographs to identify the victim and collect all critical physical evidence, including bloodstained earth, hair, and fibers, an attempt of which was made on Friday.“As per SOP, CID will now record full identities and statements of all witnesses and involved police personnel. Additionally, we are determining the precise cause, time, and manner of death using topographic sketches and fingerprint chemical analysis,” said a source.Meanwhile, investigators have now decided to send footage from the 10 CCTVs collected from locals tracing the victim girl for forensic analysis. Investigators said two movements of the girl between 4.27 pm and 4.42 pm showed her walking with Prabash. The distance from her house to the market was barely 3-4 minutes. This is where the reconstruction became necessary, claimed cops. They are now tracing the movement of each of the three remaining accused to stitch together the exact chain of events on the night the 12-year-old was raped and murdered.
