Central team reviews flood damage in Arunachal districts

Itanagar: An inter-ministerial central team (IMCT) from the Union ministry of home affairs carried out an assessment of flood-hit areas in Arunachal Pradesh’s East Siang and Lower Siang districts to gauge damage and determine the need for additional central assistance, an official report said.Floods triggered by continuous downpour on June 28 damaged standing crops, roads and bridges, and disrupted mobile connectivity, while remote areas reported shortages of rations and medicines.The team, led by MHA joint secretary Nishtha Tiwari, was accompanied by state disaster management secretary Dani Salu and lawmakers, including Pasighat West MLA Ninong Ering and Nari-Koyu MLA Tojir Kadu.According to a DIPRO report, the delegation began its inspection at an integrated farm in Ledum village, where it reviewed damage to agricultural land and private infrastructure. It then visited key public infrastructure sites, including the Rema Bridge under Korang circle, the Tene Bridge under Koyu circle in Lower Siang district, and the Remi Bridge in East Siang district, to assess the impact on connectivity.District officials and line departments briefed the team on the extent of losses, restoration work underway and long-term rehabilitation needs. The delegation also interacted with residents, Panchayati Raj Institution (PRI) members and affected farmers.East Siang DC Sonalika Jiwani, along with administrative officers and village elders (gaon buras), accompanied the central team during the inspections.The IMCT praised rescue, relief and restoration measures taken by the district administration despite adverse weather and said its findings would be compiled into a report for the Centre to consider additional financial assistance for reconstruction, the report added.
