Dibrugarh: Jorhat held a review meeting on Thursday to review preparedness measures for potential El Nino impacts.The meeting, chaired by district commissioner Jay Shivani at the Jorhat DC’s office auditorium, focused on coordinated, department-wise planning to minimise risks to agriculture, water resources and allied sectors.“El Nino is not a distant threat; it is a challenge we must prepare for now, across every department, so that our farmers and citizens are not caught unprepared,” the DC said.El Nino is a natural climate pattern caused by periodic warming of sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean, which can disrupt wind and rainfall patterns and trigger reduced or erratic monsoon rainfall. Officials noted that for an agrarian district like Jorhat, the threat could mean delayed sowing, water scarcity and lower yields.The concern extends beyond the district. Earlier this month, at an Assam Flood Review Meeting in Dispur, chaired by Union ministers Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Kiren Rijiju, the Centre flagged that around 12 districts in Assam could be affected by El Nino, leading to unpredictable weather, including heavy rainfall spells, deficient rainfall and irregular rain gaps.Sanjoy Borthakur, senior scientist and head of Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Jorhat, delivered a presentation on the likely impact on rainfall patterns, crop cycles and water availability, and outlined contingency strategies and action plans for erratic weather.“We need to move from reactive responses to proactive planning. Alternate cropping strategies, water conservation measures and early advisories to farmers can significantly reduce the risk,” Borthakur said.Department heads and experts discussed roles, inter-departmental coordination, timely agro-meteorological advisories and contingency cropping plans. The DC directed all departments to finalise action plans at the earliest and ensure close coordination.
