Home guards detained after protest at Secretariat

Chennai: Three members of Tamil Nadu Home Guards were detained after they attempted to stage a protest in front of the state Secretariat on Wednesday morning, demanding regular employment throughout the month and better pay. They were later released with a warning.The protesters, including Sureshkumar from Namakkal district, assembled in front of the Secretariat at about 10.45am and sat on the road, raising slogans urging the state govt to provide home guards with work throughout the month.The protesters said that the home guards were currently being assigned duty for five days a month and paid a daily wage of ₹560, which they said was insufficient to meet their livelihood needs. A police team evacuated the protesters from the road to prevent disruption near the Secretariat. The three Home Guard personnel were also taken to the Fort police station for questioning. After questioning, the police released the three men with a warning.
