Music, movement & timeless fables: Panchatantra retold through dance, not dialogue

Animal fables from the Panchatantra came alive at Ravindra Bharathi on Friday evening as Dancing Tales… Panchatantra, a 75-minute Bharatanatyam dance-theatre production, drew a packed audience. First premiered in 2006, the Shankarananda Kalakshetra production, conceptualised and choreographed by Dr Ananda Shankar Jayant, unfolded five classic tales — from the clever hare and the lion to the monkey and the crocodile — through dance, narration and a lyric-free score by Prema Ramamurthy. Nearly 20 dancers, including Mithun Shyam and Aditi Rao Ashtaputre, animated the stage with fluid storytelling that shifted from humour to moral tension, earning applause and rhythmic foot-taps from children and classical dance enthusiasts alike.
