Navi Mumbai deputy chief arrested for taking 42k bribe

Navi Mumbai: The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), Navi Mumbai, on Tuesday arrested Dr Kailas Gaikwad, Deputy Municipal Commissioner of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC), for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 42,000 from a sub-contractor.ACB officials said the complainant approached the agency on April 20, alleging that Gaikwad had demanded a bribe to clear a Rs 21 lakh bill related to encroachment removal work carried out in Airoli between November 15, 2024 and November 15, 2025.After verifying the complaint, the ACB laid a trap at around 4pm on Tuesday at Gaikwad’s office on the third floor of the NMMC headquarters, where he was caught red-handed while accepting the bribe.Deputy SP Dharmaraj Sonake confirmed the operation. “We had recieved a written complaint by a sub-contractor alleging that DMC Dr Kailas Gaikwad has demanded a bribe of Rs 42,000 from him as 2% commission.”An FIR has been registered against Gaikwad at NRI Coastal Police Station under relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act. Further investigation is underway.
