Panaji: Even as Goa continues to grapple with a significant monsoon rainfall deficit, eight rain gauge stations across the state have recorded more than 1,000mm of cumulative seasonal rainfall since June 1.The highest seasonal rainfall in the state continues to be recorded at Canacona, followed by Dharbandora and Sanguem.According to the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) daily rainfall bulletin, the stations at Canacona (1,298.8mm), Dharbandora (1,246.4mm), Sanguem (1,235.3mm), Valpoi (1,103mm) and Quepem (1,100.6mm) have each crossed the 1,000mm seasonal rainfall mark.Close behind are Ponda (1,057.1mm), Margao (1,064.6mm) and Sanquelim (1,028.6mm).Despite these impressive localised totals, the state as a whole remains well below normal rainfall for the season.Although the latest spell has helped add to seasonal total in the interior talukas, it has not been sufficient to erase the state’s overall rainfall deficit, which widened after an unusually subdued phase of the monsoon this month.The IMD’s rainfall statement shows that between June 1 and July 19, Goa has received an average of 989mm of rainfall against the normal 1,569.6mm, leaving the state with a 37% seasonal deficit.The observatory data also reflected warm and humid conditions. Panaji recorded a maximum temperature of 32.8°C, which is 3.5°C above normal, while Mormugao recorded 31.2°C, 2°C above normal.IMD forecasts indicate that light to moderate rainfall is very likely over the state till July 25.
