Ahmedabad: The civic body’s health wing tested 709 food samples from various establishments between June 1 and June 30 and found two to be unsafe and 44 substandard. The sample of kala khatta ice gola syrup from Veer Azad Cold Drinks & Fresh Juice Parlour in Vatva, and the gravy sample from Jay Ambe Bhojanalay in Rakhial were declared unsafe. These establishments now face police cases.The food department inspected 1,877 units in the city last month, issuing 545 notices for regulatory violations. Approximately 2,748kg of solid food items and 1,269 litres of liquid food products deemed unhealthy were destroyed. Fines totalling Rs 10.29 lakh were imposed and 387 Total Polar Compounds tests were conducted to check the quality of edible oil.

During June, AMC collected 22 samples of cold drinks, juices, lassi, ice creams, syrups. shikanji and ice golas; 35 samples of sugarcane juice, mango milkshake and watermelon juice; 121 samples of paneer, milk and other dairy products; 28 samples of sweets; 26 samples of bakery products; 73 samples of namkeen; 37 samples of gram flour, maida and grains; 37 samples of edible oil; 101 samples of spices; and 229 food samples from other categories.AMC has introduced QR codes for vendors to allow customer submit feedbacks. Units are being monitored and acted against based on the feedback received. So far, over 10,000 food vendors have been registered in the city. Authorities also seized 450kg of parcel lime valued at approximately Rs 22,500, along with 508kg of refined cottonseed oil valued at approximately Rs 73,660. Four units were also sealed during the month for unhygienic conditions.
