Lucknow: Seven second-year MBBS students of Government Medical College (GMC), Jalaun, were suspended for a week and fined Rs 1,000 each after an inquiry found them guilty of violating anti-ragging norms. Principal Arvind Trivedi told TOI that the probe report into the alleged ragging incident has been completed and submitted. The college administration initiated action after taking cognisance of a video related to the incident that surfaced on social media. Trivedi said the matter was referred to the institution’s anti-ragging committee, which led to an investigation.Besides the action against the senior students, the college also penalised a first-year MBBS student for sharing mobile phone numbers allegedly used during the interaction.“The inquiry found no physical contact between the senior and junior students. The entire interaction took place digitally through WhatsApp. It was also found that the junior student concerned had not directly reported the matter to the institution’s Anti-Ragging Cell or Squad,” Trivedi said. The principal said the disciplinary action was taken in line with Supreme Court directions and the anti-ragging guidelines issued by the University Grants Commission and the National Medical Commission. The college is affiliated with Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical University, Lucknow.Following the incident, the Anti-Ragging Squad stepped up surveillance across the campus, including round-the-clock monitoring and surprise inspections in hostel premises and common areas. Counselling sessions have also been organised for first-year MBBS students of the 2026-27 batch to reinforce awareness about anti-ragging rules and campus safety. The administration additionally advised students against sharing personal contact details indiscriminately or recording videos that could later be circulated online, stressing the need to maintain discipline and ensure a safe academic environment.
